Understanding Residential Association
Table of Contents
Guide Purpose:
- This guide IS designed to:
- Shows how to pull and event association
- Explain how Residential association works
- This guide IS NOT designed to:
- Show how Commercial association works.
Association is the linking of a detected service event to a known customer. The service event tells us that service was performed; the association tells us who received that service. To associate a service event to a hauler's customer, a list of customers (and associated service information) must first be provided by the hauler. This list (and associated service information) is the basis for associating service events. There are currently 2 distinct methods of customer association: Residential association and Commercial association. This guide will help you understand how residential association is done and how to access this information.
Residential Line of business is services performed for residential locations. Our customers through the collections API sends us daily routes and stops which would be assigned to trucks. This Routes aligns with the end users address and as events are being generated, our system associates the GPS location of the event to the addresses within the routes.
How to View a Residential Association Event
On how to find an associated event, please refer to our Finding Event Association guide.
-
Status: This shows the status of the service done as shown in the BLUE Below is the list of status of services done
- Completed: This means the system was able to match a service event GPS Lat/Lon with GPS point from the customer records within a schedule
- Extra Stop Completed: This means the system was able to match a service event GPS Lat/Lon with a GPS point from the customer records within the radius which the service was performed. The matched event is not part of the schedule
- Unknown Stop: this means the GPS location of the service completed could not be matched with any address within the customers records provided by the tenant
-
Blocked: This means there was an obstruction, and the service could not be completed
-
Confidence Level: This is calculation that looks at where an event happened and the closest parcels to it to generate a level of confidence with the association as shown in the BLUE
- For example: An event occurred close to Parcel A and B. The calculation takes into consideration the distance between the event and the 2 closest parcels and generates a score that ranges between 50 to 100
- 50 score tells us that we are not fully confident in the association and there is a 50% chance that the event could be associated to Parcel B instead of Parcel A
- The higher the number from 50, the better the confidence level
- 100 score tells us that we are fully confident in the association of the event to Parcel A
- If associated customer record is outside a parcel, then it will automatically generate a low Confidence score
- If associated parcel contains +1 unique account number (of same material type), then it will automatically generate a low Confidence score
- Stop Address: This shows the address attached to the Stop name as shown in the BLUE box
-
GPS Location: This section shows the longitude and latitude of the event that was captured as highlighted in the GREEN box

Residential Association Explained
This section is broken down into 3 parts to better understand the different Icons that helps with event association.
Diamond Icons
Diamond icons represent the location of the customer record. When a customer record is provided to us by our tenants, it's either communicated as geographic coordinates (latitude/longitude) or as a street address. If it's provided as a street address, we convert the address into latitude/longitude to give us a single point on the map.
- Green Diamond: Location of the customer record associated with the selected event
- Blue Diamond: Location of the next customer record associated with a service event from the same truck
- Purple Diamond: Location of the previous customer record associated with a service event from the same truck
-
Yellow Diamond: Location of a customer record in the area of the selected event either not associated with a service event or not associated immediately before or after the selected event
Trash Can Icons
The trash can icons represent the precise location of a service event (where collection service was performed). Following detection of the event, 3rd Eye associates the service even to a customer record. This is done by comparing the Lat/Lon of the service event to all parcels within a predefined radius, then assigning the event to the most logical parcel and customer record.
- Green Trash Can: The physical location of the selected associated service event
- Blue Trash Can: The physical location of the next associated service event performed by the same truck
-
Purple Trash Can: The physical location of the previous associated service event performed by the same truck
All Other Symbolic Imagery
- Green Box: This box shows the parcel containing the customer location associated with the selected service event
- Blue Box: This box shows the parcel containing the customer location for the next associated service event performed by the same truck
- Purple Box: This box shows the parcel containing the customer location for the previous associated service event performed by the same truck
-
Orange Circle: This circle represents the radius (default = 25 meters) we use to identify all potential parcels for determining customer association
- If there are multiple parcels within this radius, we associate the service event with the most likely customer using distance from customer property boundaries and vehicle heading, among other factors
- We also provide a confidence level to support our association
-
Orange Line: This indicates the direction in which the vehicle is moving
- This allows us to determine which side of the street to consider for parcel matching, as ASLs and AFLs only provide service on the right side (curb side) of the truck
-
Blue Line: This is a GPS breadcrumb trail of the vehicle immediately prior to the selected service event
How Residential Association Works
- The orange line as discussed in the prior section shows the direction in which the vehicle is going. This is important to residential association as we use the direction to identify the parcel which the event will be associated with.
- Residential association aligns with parcels on the curb side of the vehicle
- The green can symbolize the location where the event happened. When an event occurs, a GPS coordinate is generated
- This GPS coordinate is used to associate an event with the GPS locations uploaded in the collection route
- To select the right parcel an event is associated with, we use a Geometric calculation to determine the distance between where the event occurred and the closest parcel.
- In the image below, we see 3 parcels within the 25m radius which could potentially be associated with the event
- The blue lines do not come standard with an associated event image. This is added for illustration.
- We then look at the distance between the event and the parcels within the radius
- Using a distance calculation, we determine the closest parcel as the parcel an event is associated with
- For more accuracy, we developed a confidence level to help reassure the event being associated with the selected parcel.
- For more information on confidence level, please refer to How to View Residential Association section of this guide.
- In the image below, we see 3 parcels within the 25m radius which could potentially be associated with the event
