Maintaining a safe distance between vehicles will help avoid these risky situations that can lead to accidents. the driver will be marked accordingly based on the distance to which they are following too close.
Criteria include:
- Following too Closely (<1 sec)
- Following too Closely (1-2 sec)
- Following too Closely (2-3 sec)
- Following too Closely (3-4 sec)
Example 1
Following too Closely 1-2sec
- The driver is following the vehicle in the red circle in front of him too closely, leaving only a 1 –2 second gap between them.
- 1-2 seconds is not enough time for the truck to stop when it is traveling at 64mph as seen in the green box on the lower left.
- To determine how many seconds the gap is choose a stationary point in the video. In this sample we have chosen the structure holding up the freeway signs in the blue circle.
- When the vehicle in the red circle passes the stationary point you have chosen, begin counting.
- You would count as follows: One-thousand, Two-thousand, Three-thousand, etc.
- Or you could use One-Mississippi, Two-Mississippi, Three-Mississippi.
- When the vehicle in the red circle passes the stationary point you have chosen, begin counting.
- When the truck is parallel to the structure in the blue circle stop counting.
- In this example the driver was leaving a 2 second gap between their truck and the vehicle in the red circle.
- In the green box on the left, you can see that the truck is traveling at 64mph and could not safely stop if the vehicle in the red circle suddenly stopped.
- This video event has been scored as Following Too Close (1-2sec) as seen in the blue box on the right.
